N2 - It is challenging for the transportation industry to balance transport costs and carbon emissions. However, intermodal transport is viewed as a modal which can effectively improve transportation capacity and reduce carbon emissions. The aim of this research is to explore the combination of mega intermodal freight trains (MIFTs) and Mega Intermodal Hubs (MIHs) to reduce carbon emissions and improve the efficiency of transport systems. This research analyses the environmental impacts of intermodal freight transport networks through comparing the carbon emissions of different transport modes: road, railway, inland waterways, and short-sea shipping. This research applied the hub-and-spoke network concept to develop intermodal freight network and optimise the location of mega intermodal hubs for the intermodal freight transport network from the north of China to the midlands of China.
