N2 - Ant colony algorithm (ACA) is a novel category of bionic meta-heuristic algorithm, in which parallel computation and positive feedback mechanism are adopted. The development of ACA and its hardware realization are reviewed. The main characteristics of ACA are discussed, and the detailed scheme for field programmable gate array (FPGA)-based hardware realization of ACA is proposed. The development of hardware/software partitioning, which is based on ACA, is also reviewed. Some remarks on the further research contents and directions in this domain are presented.
