N2 - When electrical capacitance tomography (ECT) is applied for 3-D imaging, the distribution for electrode arrays in the sensor has a great influence on the reconstructed image. In this work, a 24-electrode ECT sensor that covers a fixed imaging volume was optimized. The performance for image reconstruction of the sensors with different layers was compared and the 4-layer sensor was selected. Then the lengths of the electrodes for the 4-layer ECT sensor were further optimized based on the conformal transformation method. Simulations were carried out to evaluate the performance of the 3-D sensor. Numerical results show that using the designed sensor, low dynamic range, uniform sensitivity in the imaging volume and high correlation coefficient of reconstructed images can be obtained.
