title = "Mathematical explanation of effects lanes' number on highway capacity",
abstract = "This paper attempts to explain the marginal decrease of lane capacity on different-lane highways. Based on extensive field survey of traffic flow in Beijing, the findings show average capacity per lane decreases with increasing number of lanes on uninterrupted highway segments. The explanation and trend of the decrease are explored upon the mathematical analysis. The rationality of the explanation is validated by the surveyed data. It concludes that the increase of lane-changing probability is the key factor of the marginal decrease of average capacity per lane on different-lane highways. This research is valuable to the perfection for compiling Highway Capacity Manuals, the optimization in planning and design of road network, and the improvement in estimation of existing road network capacity.",
