Intrinsic structural distortion and magnetic interaction in Lu x Sm 1-x CrO 3 compounds

Effects of the substitution of nonmagnetic metal Lu with different content on the magnetic property of Lu x Sm 1-x CrO 3 (0 < x < 1) are reported here for the sake of investigating the relationship between structural distortion and the magnetism of these materials. The structure of the synthesized samples was characterized by x-ray diffraction with Rietveld refinements and Raman spectroscopy at ambient conditions. Analysis of the recorded magnetization data reveals the Neel temperature changes with a reduction of the average radius of the A-site ion, and the tilting angle of the oxygen octahedron. Molecular field theory was used to calculate the strengths of the exchange interactions (J). It was found that the strength of the interaction J (reflected in the changes in the Neel temperatures) decreases with the proportion of replacement of Sm 3+ by Lu 3+ , ascribing to the changes of the oxygen octahedron tilt angle. Meanwhile, coupling effects between Cr 3+ and Sm 3+ ions are examined with enhanced susceptibilities below T N due to the polarization of Sm 3+ moments.
