摘要

This review examines how extended reality (XR) telepresence systems, enhanced by avatar embodiment, propose novel ways to improve emotional and social engagement in telecommunication and remote work. Adhering to the PRISMA protocol, this survey analyzes 98 relevant studies, offering a critical assessment from six aspects: (1) publication categories, (2) authors’ country, (3) application domains, (4) key attributes, (5) system evaluation, and (6) avatar embodiment type. We then conducted an in-depth discussion on four aspects. It suggests improvements to existing methods and investigates alternative strategies. Moreover, it provides an in-depth analysis of the characteristics of XR telepresence supporting avatar embodiment. Finally, we offer the potential research directions. Therefore, this survey reinforces the continued need and practical approaches for advancing XR telepresence integrated with avatar embodiment.
