N2 - Understanding the daily temporal pattern of bus trips is very significant for both operators and passengers. However, few studies have focused on popular areas like the Tian'anmen area. To fill this gap, this paper empirically analyzes the temporal patterns of human bus trips in the Tian'anmen area using smart card data. In addition, we proposed crowding indicators at three levels, the vehicle, link, and network levels, to make a quantitative analysis of bus networks. At the network level, we consider the importance of links. The entropy method is used to assign weights. The results indicate (a) transit ridership increases on May Day on some stops; (b) the temporal patterns of bus travel in weekdays are similar and stable, and there is a significant difference in holidays; (c) the crowding indicators we propose are appropriate. The empirical analysis and the crowding measure give us a deep and comprehensive view of Tian'anmen area bus trips.
