abstract = "Service-oriented distributed systems are internally loosely coupled in that the computation nodes are portable and reusable. They can be developed and maintained economically. Traditional middleware products enable the consistent operation on distributed objects and real-time communication. The middleware in a service-oriented distributed system provides more capabilities, such as analyzing data semantics, formulating data protocols, and defining event interfaces. This paper focuses on the design and implementation of a middleware for serviceoriented distributed systems. The relationship between the distributed object and the object proxy is briefly introduced. The functional requirements on the middleware for service-oriented distributed systems are analyzed. The operational, system, and technical architecture design of the middleware is outlined. The programming technique for implementing the middleware is presented by focusing on the XML-based textualization of distributed object proxies. The application of the middleware is demonstrated by building a distributed simulation system.",
