N2 - This paper presents a versatile perching device that enables drones to land on a variety of structured surfaces, such as walls, branches, and wires, thereby conserving energy by allowing the rotors to shut off during tasks like monitoring. While cylindrical and planar surfaces are common perching targets in most operational scenarios, current perching devices typically support only one type. We introduce a lightweight, highload capacity, compliant, and low-power multimodal perching device for drones, featuring a soft suction cup inspired by netwinged midge larvae and a mechanical gripper. This innovative device utilizes a collaborative perching mechanism, allowing it to securely perch on flat surfaces at angles ranging from 0° to 90° while bearing a significant load. Integrated with a quadrotor drone platform, this system facilitates stable, longduration perching on various targets, including cylindrical rods and flat surfaces. By leveraging the remarkable load-bearing capabilities of bio-inspired suction cups, this research offers a novel biomimetic approach to solving challenges in robotic systems.
