Abstract

Mechanical seals are widely used in the rotation parts in various applications, and the failure of them may cause serious consequences, such as pollution, corrosion, equipment shutdown, heavy casualties or other economic losses. One of the most important reason for mechanical seal failure is the seal wear. The macroscale simulation methods are commonly used to study wear of mechanical seals. These methods oftentimes do not address effects of microscopic aspects, which, according to experimental studies, are important factors in wear. In this work a wear simulation method for mechanical seals under mixed lubrication using flow factors is proposed, in which the effects of microscopic aspects of interacting surfaces are taken into account. Simulation studies are also performed to analyze the effects of the microscopic aspects.
