Abstract

Facing increasingly large-scale and complex distributed simulation applications, a great challenge is how to efficiently and transparently utilize the distributed and heterogeneous simulation resources. This paper presents VSim, a virtual simulation framework based on virtualization technology for high performance simulation. VSim consists of five layers: simulation resources layer, virtual resources pool layer, virtual simulation services layer, simulation applications layer, and ubiquitous user interface layer. VSim has been applied to a virtual battlefield environment simulation system. Application examples show that VSim can provide an effective method for quick deployment and configuration of large-scale and complex simulation systems through encapsulation and distribution of virtual machine templates. Moreover, VSim can achieve better utilization of simulation resources and better fault tolerant ability through transparent management of distributed and heterogeneous resources with virtual simulation services encapsulation, resources monitoring and dynamic scheduling, and live migration.
