Abstract

Solid fuel regression rate is important for hybrid rocket motor design and performance prediction. Ultrasonic pulse-echo system is a well-developed method to measure time-related regression rate but the accuracy of the system is largely dependent on wave velocity of the fuel, which is related to local pressure and temperature. In this study, a hybrid rocket motor with catalyst bed was designed and fabricated. The instantaneous and average regression rates of a slab fuel grain and a square-port fuel grain were measured by ultrasonic equipment under different oxidizer mass flux. The effect of pressure and temperature on ultrasonic measurement was considered. Correlation was drawn between regression rate and oxidizer mass flux for 90% hydrogen peroxide (H 2O2)/polyethylene (PE) combination.
