Transmission line icing detection using gradient chain matching

Abstract

A new method to detect ice in surveillance image of power transmission line is proposed in this paper. First, binarization is performed on the surveillance image, which is to find objects’ regions. Second, based on binarization results, the maximum object region is found and recognized as the suspected areas of icing. Finally, the gradients of the suspected area are calculated and used to compose the gradient chain, which is used to perform ice feature matching to judge the icing status. The experimental results show that the proposed method has good performance to detect ice area in some typical images.
