Abstract

The super carbon nanotube (ST) constructed by Y-branched carbon nanotubes (CNTs) has been proposed recently. In this paper, nine possible types of topologies for the STs are predicted. And the axial tensile modulus of the ST with armchair-armchair topology is investigated by the atomic-scale finite element method. The studies show that the axial tensile modulus of this structure is dependent on the aspect ratios of the CNT arms. Furthermore, because of the great flexibility, the ST has potential applications in advanced composites.
