Abstract

Pioneers have done numerous studies on failure distribution of hardware and software. However, seldom research has been done for networks. Consequently the situations such as insufficient reliability testing and the unscientific reliability assessment usually happen during engineering application. This paper proposes a general method to determine failure distribution and relative parameter for service layer of communication networks, and analyses the different failure law for service layer of communication networks according to the performance test data in PingER database. The research shows that not all the failure distributions for service layer of communication networks obey the binomial ones. They are related to network performance parameters and failure criterions, while the binomial distribution is still the main form.
