Abstract

The effect of ply thickness on the damage mechanisms in notched composites in order was investigated using progressive failure analysis (PFA) methodology. For thicker ply laminates, higher thermal residual stresses lead to accelerating matrix cracking, delamination, splitting damage and failure type transits from brittle or pull-out to delamination.
