N2 - The Giant Magneto-Resistance (GMR) sensors are widely utilized in power systems, aerospace, modern transport system and biomedical field for their high sensitivity and wide frequency response. And the Partial Discharge (PD) detection is still an effective method for power system to evaluate the insulation status of the key power equipment. Thus, a novel PD detection method based on GMR sensor is presented in this paper. Firstly, since the pulse current method is the only PD detection method which is recommended in the international standard, and the GMR sensor is a valuable choice for detecting the pulse magnetic field generated by pulse current, the feasibility of this novel method is analyzed. And then the PD detection system is designed and realized. The installation method of GMR sensor and the weak signal detection method are all discussed and selected. Thus, the pulse magnetic field is obviously enhanced and the background interference is effectively removed. At last, the lab test based on PD pulse calibrator is carried out. And different discharge quantity and discharge frequency are utilized to verify the performance of this novel PD detection system. The results show that it is an effective method for detecting the PD signals. The possible improvements are also discussed in order to put it into practice.
