Swarmter: A Crowd Wisdom based Collective Decision Making System for Decentralized Applications

Abstract

Existing decentralized applications require robust decision-making mechanisms. Current approaches heavily rely on off-chain centralized entities and on-chain voting mechanisms, both of which present significant limitations in trust. In this paper, we introduce Swarmter, a novel blockchain-based system designed to enhance single-stage collective decision-making processes. Swarmter is distinguished by seven key elements, including three vital entities, two variable types, and two fundamental algorithms. It uniquely integrates the "surprisingly popular"method from collective intelligence research with blockchain technology to capitalize on crowd wisdom. By aggregating decisions from a diverse range of individuals, Swarmter promises to outperform existing voting systems in facilitating more accurate and cost-effective decision-making. We implement Swarmter and conduct evaluations on Ethereum, Polygon, and Optimism. Our modular, scalable implementation operates efficiently in real-world scenarios while maintaining manageable costs. Experimental results validate the system's feasibility and affirm its practical potential for enhancing decentralized governance and resilience.
