N2 - A Q-band substrate-integrated cavity (SIC) backed slot antenna is proposed for millimeter-wave communications. The proposed antenna has two substrate layers, and the SIC is implemented in the top layer with eight slots etched on its top surface. The SIC is excited through a longitudinal coupling slot by an SIW in the bottom layer. Due to the symmetrical structure, a high-order mode is generated in the SIC, which yields high gain, high efficiency, and low cross polarization level, with a compact feed structure. Further, eight of the proposed antennas are configured into a large array with a star-shaped power divider. The antenna array is prototyped and measured, exhibiting an impedance bandwidth (|S11|<-10 dB) of 44.6-45.7 GHz, a gain of 21.7 dBi, a radiation efficiency of 83%, and a co-to-cross polarization ratio of 39 dB in both E-and H-plane.
