Abstract

In this paper, a new axial ultrasonic vibration microdrilling technology has been developed to restrain the skidding motion of miniature drill at the beginning of penetration. The causes and mechanisms of the initial skidding motion of drill in conventional drilling have been analyzed. The mechanisms of intermittent cutting and initial penetration of the chisel edge, and the dynamic stability of drilling machine have been investigated analytically. An experimental study on the influence of ultrasonic vibration amplitude on the radial deflection of drill point at commencement of drilling and hole accuracy and drill life has been conducted. Finally a new variable-amplitude vibration drilling method has been presented.
