Abstract

To Investigate the aerodynamics design methods of vaneless contra-rotating turbine (VCRT), the throughflow design and analysis of VCRT compared with conventional turbine have been conducted by the ways of both controlled vortex and controlled meridian contours. The counter twisted theory of stationary vanes is applied to the high pressure straightening rotor of VCRT and a 94.2% high efficiency VCRT was designed. The results of 3D simulation indicated that it is important to adopt the way of controlled vortex to design the straightening rotor for improving the dynamic performance of VCRT on condition that its vanes are eliminated completely which decreases two free design parameters.
