N2 - This work investigates the design of sparse transmit arrays via antenna selection for joint communication radar (JCR) systems. Antenna selection is performed in terms of optimizing the ambiguity function of the transmit signal for radar detection and guaranteeing the communication quality of service. The optimization problem is formulated with respect to a boolean vector, that is used to denote the antenna selection directly without any approximation. To address the non-convex combinational optimization problem, zero-forcing beamforming is applied, and subsequently an alternative optimization method with a genetic algorithm incorporated is proposed. Simulation results validate the superiority of the proposed JCR system with the sparse transmit array and demonstrate its better performance compared with other sparse array design.
