Abstract

The Magnetic Nozzle effect on the performance of the hybrid arcjet-MPDT, operating at 10 kW with 180 A discharge current, 21 mg/s argon mass flow rate was investigated. A simplified numerical model was developed in order to study the ion acceleration process in the presence of 0.086 T applied external magnetic field. The obtained mean ion velocities are in good agreement with the experimental data from the Langmuir and Faraday probes. The reasons of an observed sharp increase in thrust with the magnetic field application were investigated. Two propellant feeding strategies were studied both experimentally and numerically. Their effectiveness was analyzed and compared in terms of propellant heating and ionization.
