Abstract

Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) is proposed in recent years to assist the mobile communication by artificially manipulating the scattered electromagnetic waves, which can further enhance the performance of wireless communications, including the coverage, signal intensity, energy efficiency, etc. The positioning function of IRS is conceptually proposed, analyzed and simulated by introducing the sum and difference patterns synthesis on a single IRS. The synthesis of sum and difference beams is numerically demonstrated, which can be adopted for a high-accurate angle of arrival (AoA) estimation based on the electromagnetic waves transmitted from either an access point (AP) or a targeted user. Thus, the proposed positioning function is very promising for the IRS based terrestrial surveying and mapping, as well as for the smart deployment of IRS.
