Abstract

The wireless applications are increasing day by day with higher rate of transmission. The variable channel conditions make it challenging to serve with the required data rate and acceptable performance. The ideal channel conditions and their respective channel coding schemes are directly not applicable to the wireless channel regime. Polar Coding has recently been invented and proven to be capacity achieving for B-DMC channel. The wireless channel being not 'memoryless' and not 'ergodic' cannot directly take the capacity achieving benefit of Polar Coding. However, we propose some approximation of the wireless channel so that the Polar Coding can be applied with some moderation for the wireless fading channel. In particular we discuss the slow fading channel and propose some methodical steps to apply the coding scheme. The approximation of fading channel as an AWGN channel for some duration of channel state, quantization of the channel to a finite number of channel states, pre-set frozen sets to be applied for the particular channel state are the key steps of the paper. Although the approximations make the performance suboptimal, we present some initial work in progress research simulation results for the suitability of Polar Coding for fading channels.
