Abstract

Attitude measurement error is one of the main factors that deteriorate the imaging accuracy of laser scanning. In view of the fact that the inertial navigation system (INS) with high accuracy is very costly, a low-cost but effective attitude determination method based on target images was proposed to measure the platform attitude for laser scanning in this paper. Based on the relationship between the attitude angles of the platform and the relative movement of two adjacent images, the attitude angles can be derived by the proposed method, which can be used for obtaining the three dimensional point cloud of the target. To validate the effectiveness of the method, the indoor and outdoor experiments were carried out. The experiment results showed that the attitude accuracy of the platform using the proposed method was better than 0.04 (RMSE), and can be used for obtaining the 3D point cloud of the target, which was consistent with that using the INS.
