Abstract
Residual stress adjustment was achieved in (Zr 0.55Al 0.1Ni 0.05Cu 0.3) 99Y 1 bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) using laser surface melting. The residual stress distribution in the treated alloy was revealed based on the experimental measurement and finite element simulation. The surface layer exhibited tensile residual stress and the nether part of the alloy indicated compressive residual stress for balance. The mechanical properties in bending of the treated BMG were profoundly affected by the laser-introduced residual stress, and the strength and plasticity were enhanced.
