abstract = "Previous studies mainly focus on the seismic performance of structures equipped with various types of passive energy dissipation devices (PEDDs), such as viscous dampers and metallic dampers. A challenging issue in this field is the optimization of the design of these structures with PEDDs, including the design of primary members, the distribution of PEDDs and the determination of characteristic parameters of PEDDs. Despite that several optimization techniques are proposed to improve the seismic performance of structures and protect primary members; these techniques are only applicable to regular structures. In this paper, an optimization process for an irregular structure with PEDDs is implemented as a case study, the investigated structure is a typical composite single column elevated station which is irregular both in plane and in elevation. Multiple indexes representing the seismic performance of structures are considered and nonlinear time history analysis is conducted to obtain these index. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed optimization process is validated and design advices for the investigated structure are given.",
