Abstract
The effect of silicon (Si) on the corrosion resistance of the rust layer in Cr-Cu weathering steel under simulated tropical marine atmospheric conditions was investigated. The addition of Si significantly improves corrosion resistance by reducing the internal stress within the formed rust layer. First, an appropriate amount of Si promotes the formation of α-FeOOH, increasing the thermodynamic stability of the rust layer. Additionally, the presence of Si refines the rust layer, leading to higher toughness and effectively slowing the propagation of cracks within the rust layer.
