Abstract

Sampler which is one of the most important tools for the lunar subsurface exploration plays a vital role in sampling the lunar regolith. At present the existing sampling drillers can not meet the requirement for deep, original and repeated sampling together. This paper presents a new kind of sampling instrument, Multi-Rod Deep Driller (MRDD), to deal with the issues raised in the low gravity environment of moon. MRDD is equipped with 4 hollow rods, which can be interconnected. So it can realize 0 to 1.5m deep sampling. MRDD has the advantages of novel structure, powerful function and it can meet the three requirements above. Results of simulation and part of prototype test show that the drilling system is feasible.
