Abstract

Because composite pressure vessel had danger with burst, health monitoring of vessel was performed using two kinds of fiber optic sensors (FOS). 7 fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors, 7 electric strain gages (ESG) and 1 SMARTape membrane deformation sensor were attached to the domes and cylinder of a composite pressure vessel. Strain and deformation monitoring were performed during hydrostatic pressurization and decompression. Firstly the composite pressure vessel was filled with water, afterward vessel and hydraulic pressure pump were joined. Every 0.2MPa data of the sensors were memorized during the pressurization while the pressure was up to 4.5MPa. Every 0.5MPa data of the sensors were memorized during the decompression, while the pressure was up to 0. The strains measured by three types of sensors increased linearly with increasing and depressing pressure. The two kinds of fiber optic sensors represented good repeatability. Strain gradient in the domes was monitored by using FBG sensor. Total deformation was measured by using SMARTape sensor.
