Modeling the impacts of ATIS on joint trip destination, modal split, and route choice behaviors

Abstract

Literature on evaluating the impacts of traffic information on traveler choice behaviors principally focuses on travelers' route choice decisions. In this paper, two additional dimensions of choice are introduced by considering the joint trip destination, modal split, and route choice decisions in a transportation network with advanced traveler information systems (ATIS). We analyze the effects of information provisions on trip destination, modal split, and route choice by using the combined network equilibrium modeling approach. By comparing the decision-making behaviors of equipped commuters with those of unequipped commuters under ATIS, we obtain some primary insights on how market penetration and information quality influence travelers' choice behaviors.
