Microstructure refinement of cast TiAl alloy by heat treatment

Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

Abstract

The effect of heat treatments on microstructure of the cast Ti-47Al-2Nb-2Cr (atom fraction, %) alloy and the hot isostatically pressed (HIPed) alloy sample were investigated. Effect of initial microstructure and sample size on the refinement and the uniformity of the microstructure after heat treatments was investigated. The results show the quenching resulted in the massive transformation structure and the mottled structure for the cast sample and the HIPed sample, respectively. After cycle heat treatments, the fine fully lamellar microstructure (FFL) with a grain size less than 50 μm was successfully obtained. For the 10 mm × 10 mm × 12 mm samples without cast defects, no cracks were found after heat treatment, but for the φ15 mm × 30 mm samples, the cracks and the microstructure ununiformity is inevitable after quenching.
