Abstract

Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAVs) can carry a variety of mission payloads and work in many kinds of models, currently still images are compressed by JPEG compression algorithms series and dynamic images can be compressed by many algorithms, such as H.264, MPEG and so on. As UAV airborne platform is restrained by its size, weight and power consumption, it requires a suitable and common compression method. According to the characteristics of UAV video and still images, this paper presents a common H.264 compression method of high compression ratio based on (9,7) DWT, this method integrates JPEG2000 and H.264 compression algorithms. Experimental results show that the compression ratio of the proposed method for still images has great improvement compared with H.264 and JPEG2000 under the condition of similar Peak Signal to Noise Ratio (PSNR) value; In the condition of small decreased PSNR value (mainly luminance component) but very small loss of subjective quality, it achieves a substantial improvement in compression ratio for UAV reconnoiter video than the above two standard compression methods and also saves bandwidth greatly.
