Abstract

Sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB) is one of primary factors that lead to microbiology influenced corrosion (MIC) of metallic materials. SRB can reduce SO 4 2 in the environment to S 2- through metabolism activity, so SRB became the main factor that causes the increase of acidity of the oxygen depleted enrionments and thereby, the notable increase of metal corrosion. In this paper, three aspects of the environmental pollution as well as four methods for protection are discussed. Although there are many disadvantages of the SRB, the economic benefit of SRB is discovered and its functions in wastewater treatment, biology and ecology are also developed. In the end, the application of the SRB in wastewater treatment and flue gas desulphurization (FGD) are demonstrated.
