Abstract
We report on the preparation of novel ZnO microcakes via a simple yet efficient hydrothermal approach. Three different ZnO microcakes are obtained by varying the amount of sodium hydroxide, and the influence of the sodium hydroxide on the growth of microcakes are discussed in order to elucidate growth mechanism of the microcakes. We also find that the microcakes are assembled by octahedrons and that the morphology is critical to tailoring the gas-sensing performance. Such octahedron-assembled ZnO microcakes show good gas-sensing properties to ethanol gas even at a low concentration.
