Abstract

This paper gives a view of the effects of fault quantity on spectrum-based fault localization. There is a belief that multiple faults would bring side impact on spectrum-based fault localization. However, systemic analysis about that belief is discussed in very limited work and accurate quantitative analysis of that impact compared to single-fault scenario is lacked. To validate that belief, we conducted experiments on 13606 programs with multiple faults. Our results confirm that the existing of multiple faults will bring general side impaction on the efficiency of spectrum-based fault localization. On the contrary to common belief, that side impaction is not as great as expected. Further, there is a positive correlation between the number of faults and the effectiveness of fault localization for locating the most localizable faults.
