Abstract

The processability and thermal stability of propargyl Novolac resins (PN resins) were studied, and the evaluation of PN resins as matrices for silica laminate composites were also presented. The results reveal that: PN resins possess excellent processability to RTM techniques; the cured resins exhibit high thermal stability (Tg>330°C); the mechanical properties of silica/PN laminates are improved compared to conventional phenolics laminate, and the mechanical properties show a decreasing trend with increase in propargyl contents; the thermal stability of silica/PN laminate (Tg 360°C) is far superior to that of conventional phenolics laminate (Tg<210°C-230°C). As a novel addition curable phenolic resins, PN resins might be utilized in ther-mostructural composite materials.
