Abstract

The processability and thermal stability of methylol propargyl novolac resins (MPN resins) were studied, and the mechanical and thermal properties of MPN resins as matrices of silica laminate composites were characterized. MPN resins possess excellent processability for RTM and compression mold processes, and the cured resins exhibit a high thermal stability (Ts > 350°C). The silica/MPN laminates show improved mechanical properties compared to conventional phenolics laminate, and the mechanical properties decrease with increasing methylol contents in MPN resins. The thermal stability of silica/MPN laminates (Tg, 360-380°C) was far superior to that of conventional phenolics laminate (Tg, 280°C). MPN resins might be utilized as matrices of advanced thermo-structural composite materials.
