Ejection seat test techniques in a high-speed wind tunnel

Abstract

The ejection seat test technique as a lifesaving equipment for fighter pilots was developed for high-speed wind tunnels with scaled models, to exactly simulate real conditions and to get more practical test data. The test techniques were developed in a 1.2-m high-speed wind tunnel with a set of specially designed test samples capable of reaching the range of angle of attack from 0 to 360 deg and angle of sideslip of 0 to 180 deg. The angle of attack and angle of sideslip of the ejection seat model were defined at zero values when facing forward to the stream. The results show that the support system is structured and easy to be operated and the test technique solves a key problem of conducting the ejection seat test at high angle of attack and angle of sideslip of 1.2-m high-speed with tunnel. The results also show that the ejection seat tests at subsonic and transonic speeds can be extended to the test applications at high angle of attack of airplanes, missiles, and blunt bodies.
