Abstract

The microstructures of Ni-43Ti-7Al (at-%) alloys containing different oxygen contents have been investigated. It has been found that the volume fraction of Ti2Ni increases with increasing oxygen. In the sample with oxygen content of 6000 wt ppm, the formation of B2 phase is suppressed, and the Ti 2Ni phase solidifies as the primary phase. Thus, oxygen will have a strong effect on the microstructures of Ni-43Ti-7Al alloys. Furthermore, in Ni-43Ti-7Al-0.05Y and Ni-43Ti-7Al-0.15Y alloys, the volume fraction of Ti2Ni decreases, and a small amount of Y 2O 3 can be observed compared with the Y free alloys, which further verifies the effect of oxygen on the Ti2Ni phase. Finally, the possible mechanism for the role of oxygen on the Ti 2Ni phase is discussed.
