Abstract

Pot-cover Effect refers to the phenomenon whereby water accumulates underneath an impervious cover. The key to the study of Pot-cover Effect is simulating gaseous water migration in subgrade soil in arid and semiarid regions. Accordingly, the Pot-cover Effect indoor test equipment is developed by Geotechnical Engineering Laboratory of Beihang University. The equipment consists of three parts: main body part, temperature control system and temperature-water content monitoring system. The equipment has the following functions: (a) it can simulate the gaseous water migration in soil, (b) it can simulate the one-dimensional water and heat migration in soil, and (c) it can do freezing-thawing cycle test. The equipment is used to do Pot-cover Effect test under the conditions of constant top temperature and periodic varied top temperature respectively. The test results verify the functions of the equipment and indicate that the equipment achieve the purpose of development.
