Abstract
A simple method is proposed to measure the total rotation of polarization axis caused by both internal and external factors during the fabrication process in polarization-maintaining fibers (PMFs). The method is suitable for any kind of PMF, and avoids the additional clamping-induced rotation of fiber with assistance of gravity. Based on this method, a polarization-maintaining photonic crystal fiber (PM-PCF) and a conventional panda PMF used in fiber-optic gyroscope (FOG) are tested. The experimental results provide foundation for the analysis of fiber quality and magnetic-induced bias error in a FOG.
