Abstract

This paper develops a rapid sizing method and an aerodynamic design method for the periodic cruise vehicle boosted by rockets. The rapid sizing method relies on 3DOF pointmass equations of motion, and can determine the total weight and propellant weight of each stage of the launch system for a given mission specification. The aerodynamic design based on the passive waverider method applies to the wing-body-configuration. Initially, a periodic cruise vehicle for global reach is estimated via the proposed sizing method, and the total masses of the vehicle and the whole launch system are about 5.9 t and 95 t, respectively. Then, a passive waverider configuration is developed, and its inviscid maximum lift-to-drag ratio achieves 7.055 at the angle-of-attack of 5°. Verification results demonstrate that passive waverider configuration that is beneficial to the improvement of lift-to-drag ratio would be a potential scheme of periodic cruise vehicle for global reach.
