Abstract
The laser Doppler velocimeter has been used to measure the shear layer development of laminar separated flow downstream a backward-facing step. The distributions of the mean velocity, turbulence intensity and the development of shear layer thickness are obtained. The effects of free stream turbulence intensities on the separated flow are also considered. It was found that the streamwise velocity decreases just downstream the step, which was explained from the view of vorticity kinematics.
