Abstract
Experimental flow data are urgently necessary to study flow field structures of a water jacket and the flow mechanism of coolant in a diesel engine cylinder head. However, there are many difficulties in flow measurements due to narrow and complicated spaces in the water jacket and hardly arrangements for optical path. Reports a particle image velocimetry(PIV) measurement in the flow field of a water jacket. The water jacket was modified and remanufactured to arrange an optical path for the PIV measurement without changing its inner flow structure. Appropriate tracing particles were selected and a particle delivery device was also designed. The PIV measurement results were also carefully calibrated. Finally, the flow parameters of the flow field in the water jacket, such as velocity, vorticity and turbulence, were obtained successfully.
