Abstract
The feasibility of an application of particle damping to the noise and vibration control of a drum brake was analyzed. The characteristics of the damping were tested. An FEA model of the drum brake was set up in which the interactive friction force between the drum and the friction plate was considered. The stress of the drum with some holes in its rim was calculated by ANSYS under braking conditions. Particles of different materials were filled into the holes with different packing ratios in proper order, and then the variation of the drum's modal damping ratio with particle parameters were obtained by experimental modal analysis. The results indicate that particle damping absorber can effectively increase the modal damping ratio and can distinctly reduce the vibration and the noise.
