Abstract

On-line monitoring and evaluation of safe conditions of civil buildings are essential for maintaining structural safety and lowering maintenance and repair costs. In comparison with traditional monitoring means, fibre optic sensors are characterized by smaller volume, higher sensitivity, linear response, wider signal band, stronger electro-magnetic interference resistance, stronger anti-attenuation capability, easier installation and longer service life. Therefore, the research on their applications becomes very popular. The tests have been made with fibre optic sensors in actual construction projects for monitoring such information as strain, stress, crack and vibration, which is essential to structural safety. With fibre optic sensors suitable for civil architecture classified according to their applications, the operating principles, uses, and possible problems and solutions of these sensors are discussed.
