Abstract
A type of novel epoxy curing agent, Bis(2-hydroxy-3-amidoethylaminemethyl-5-nonylphenyl) methane (BA) was synthesized from dimer which was obtained from nonylphenyl and formaldehyde. The structure of this curing agent was attributed by IR and HNMR. The reactivity of the curing agent was investigated by using the differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and the optimum content of BA used in curing process was definited at 43.19% in weight. From the results of dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), the β-relaxation contributed by the nonyl of BA was confirmed, which increased the toughness of the cured resins. The results of mechanical performance test demonstrates that the impact strength of the resins cured by BA was 36.91% higher than that of the resins cured by normal aromatic amine. In conclusion, BA is a elasticizer and active curing agent for epoxy resins.
