Abstract

Current image fusion algorithms are based mainly on all the information of the original images, which is not beneficial to fusion data compacting. A novel image fusion algorithm combined fusion with data compression is proposed. It follows the maximum edge correlation criterion and fuses multi-scale edges of the original images only. After obtaining the multi-scale edges of the fused image, those edges important for visualization are coded efficiently to compact the fusion data, which reduces memory cost and decreases data transmission bandwidth. The reconstructed image still contains the information of the original images effectively and is acceptable in vision. Experimental results show that this method can achieve good image fusion while reduce large amount of fusion data.
